Visa Information

General information

We are encouraging everyone to complete an advance online tourist visa application for a Visa on Arrival - if applicable for the passport you hold - in advance of travel to Nepal. This will save you time at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport. See the “visa on arrival” section below for further details.

Visas for restricted countries

Passport holders of some countries are not eligible for Visa on Arrival. Citizens of the following countries must instead apply for a visa through their nearest Nepali Embassy or Consulate:

  • Afghanistan

  • Cameroon

  • Eswatini

  • Ethiopia

  • Ghana

  • Iran

  • Iraq

  • Liberia

  • Nigeria

  • Palestine

  • Somalia

  • Syria

  • Zimbabwe

Visas on arrival

By far the easiest route for obtaining a visa to visit Nepal is to complete an advance online tourist visa application for a Visa on Arrival.

  • This is a form to pre-fill. It is not yet approved until paid for and stamped by immigration at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport.

  • The cost is US $30.

  • Online applications should be submitted within 15 days prior to travel (not further in advance), and your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of travel.

  • Upon completing the online application, remember to print the confirmation and bring this along with you when travelling.

  • The US $30 can be paid in cash upon arrival at the airport. Change is not always available at the airport, so do try to bring along the exact amount.

For further guidance on completing the Visa on Arrival online form, read more here.

Other options

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

This is a convenient if you are able to make the payment online – though please be warned that this doesn’t always work. You can find the ETA online form here.

  • This is a form to be completed and pre-paid before travel. Once the US $30 fee has been paid online your application will be processed within 72 hours. If approved, you will be able to join the immigration queue at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport immediately upon landing.

  • Applications should be submitted within 15 days prior to travel (not further in advance), and your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of travel.

For further guidance on completing the ETA form, read more here.

Through your nearest Nepali Embassy or Consulate

The application process can be done in-person or by post / courier at any Nepali Embassy or Consulate with a visa office. Your nearest Nepali Embassy or Consulate may be in another country. There is an online form to complete in advance of attending in-person, or sending your travel documents to an Embassy or Consulate. If online forms present a challenge, get in touch with your nearest Nepali embassy directly to arrange an in-person appointment.

Entirely on-arrival

We do not recommend this option as you will spend a long time in the immigration hall of Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport after landing. The form you will be required to complete upon arrival at the self-service kiosks is identical to the advance online tourist visa application for a Visa on Arrival. It normally takes between 10 and 15 minutes to complete the form manually. After completing the form, you will then join the queue at the Visa Fee Collection Counters to pay US $30 in cash. After this, you will join the immigration queue.
